Ask any dermatologist or beauty guru what the three most important skincare products are and they’ll tell you: sunscreen, face serum, and moisturizer.
Obviously, sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays and moisturizer hydrates your skin—but what about face serum? Why does it make the must-have list?
What is it?
Face serums are formulated to easily and quickly absorb into your skin, delivering a concentrated amount of vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants deep down to repair and boost your skin on a cellular level.
Face serums are lightweight products, so they can be layered underneath creams or lotions.
What are the benefits?
You can find face serums to hydrate, brighten, firm, exfoliate, and repair skin coloring and texture or ones that provide a combination of these benefits.
Basically, a face serum will improve the health and vibrancy of your skin.
When and how do I use it?
Can I use a face serum daily? Can I use a serum without moisturizer? Do you wash face serums off?
When you’re new to face serums, there are a lot of questions. Let us answer your basic questions.
When do I use face serums?
You should use face serums as part of your daily morning and nighttime skincare routines. Whether in the morning or evening, you’ll want to cleanse and tone before applying a face serum and then moisturize.
A face serum should always be applied before you moisturize, but there are some face serums that can be used without a moisturizer. If you have oily skin, it’s a good stand-alone skincare product, but if you have normal or dry skin, it’s better to use a face serum and follow up with a moisturizer.
How do I use face serums?
After cleansing and toning, you can apply the recommended amount of face serum. Look at your bottle to know the recommended amount, but it’s usually just a few drops or one pump because it’s highly concentrated so a little goes a long way.
Here’s what to do:
1. Put a little face serum on your fingertips. Using two fingers is smart so you don’t waste any of the serum and so it doesn’t absorb into the palms of your hands.
2. Rub your fingers together. As you’d assume, this spreads the serum so you can rub it evenly onto your face.
3. Massage the serum onto your face. Remember to massage gently and only use your fingertips.
4. Use a moisturizer. Typically, after giving the serum a few minutes to fully absorb into your skin, you’d follow with a moisturizer because its magical skin powers need to be locked in with a good moisturizer. But again, some serums and skin types allow you to skip this step.
What are the different types?
There are several face serums on the market. Each is made with different active ingredients and textures to give your face the benefits it’s after. The more common types of face serums include:
Acne and problem-pone skin serums
Daytime protection serums
Nighttime restoration serums.
Which face serum do I use?
Choose a face serum that protects (think antioxidants) and brightens your skin to put on in the morning, like a Vitamin C serum, and then one that hydrates and restores your skin at night, like a hyaluronic acid serum.
Really, the best face serum depends on your skin type and the skin issues you’re trying to resolve. Pick your primary concern and use a face serum for that and then use other skincare products for other areas of concern or a face serum based on your primary skin concern during each season. Some women opt for a combination face serum that targets their top 2-3 skin concerns.
