Going green is not just a buzz word. Becoming more responsible and sustainable can have significant positive impacts on our environment. Many companies offer green cleaning products, but did you know that you can also go green with your skincare regimen?

If you have an interest in natural skincare, you are in the right place. Here are some tips on how you can create an eco-friendly beauty regimen that benefits both the environment and you.

1. Use Reusable Cotton Pads

Removing cotton from our beauty routine is one of the best ways to work towards saving the planet.

Did you know that the amount of water needed to produce cotton is huge (to produce one cotton shirt, it takes the same amount of water that one person would drink in 3 years) and cotton pads do not biodegrade, due to the bleaching process used to make them.

Ditching the one-time use cotton pads for reusable cloths made of things like muslin conserves water and reduces the amount of trash sent to landfills.

2. Ditch the Microbeads

Any time you see a product that claims to exfoliate, check the contents. If it contains microbeads, avoid it at all costs. Microbeads are not good for your skin or the environment. Microbeads are actually just little pieces of plastic in your products (usually body wash and face wash).

They are too small to be filtered out through water treatment plants and they don’t dissolve or degrade, so they end up in our oceans and lakes, where they disrupt ecosystems.

3. Buy Zero Waste Packaging Products

Think about all those tubes and jars from your face washes, toners, moisturizers, and face masks. Where do those packages end up when the product is gone? Now, multiply that by how many products you go through yearly and think about all the waste you are making.

To combat this, you can buy zero waste products, which use sustainable and responsible packaging that can be recycled is biodegradable.

4. Recycle Your Empties

The packaging from your empty products can often be recycled. Check to see what is accepted in your area, and be sure to clean them out, but you should be able to recycle plastic, cardboard, and paper.

Some companies also offer recycling of their product packaging and refill the empties with new products while others have programs where you get loyalty points for recycling empties.

5. Educate Yourself

Be wary of greenwashing, which happens when companies claim to be all-natural or eco-friendly but actually are not. Just because the package says it is made with all-natural, non-toxic, or eco-friendly ingredients don’t necessarily mean that the product is, as there is no regulation of these claims.

Natural Skincare Made Easy

Making your beauty routine more eco-friendly requires some small changes that are pretty easy, but will have a large impact on the environment. While you might have to make a larger initial investment in things like reusable makeup pads, that investment will pay off in the long-run.
